Have you ever wondered why your favorite color isn’t the same as your friend, spouse or sibling? Because you are unique & so should be your money goals.

It’s because we are all different from each other, rather we are all unique.

So, what makes you unique?

  • Your past experiences including your upbringing, your role models while growing up, your social connections, etc. E.g., different family structure, social status, cities, etc.

  • Your interpretation of these experiences – the meaning you derived from whatever you observed actively or passively. E.g. while you thought of your parents being cautious with money as good, your sibling found it super restrictive

  • Application of your interpretation to your life – how you finally implemented the meaning you took from those experiences. E.g. your mother’s extreme saving habits made your sister a bargain queen, while you decided to earn much more so you don’t have to bargain ever

On top of all these, your life’s everchanging circumstances add another layer of uniqueness to your life. Making you super unique, which means the achievements that will bring deeper and long-lasting satisfaction to your life will also be different than others. When your money goals are aligned with achievements that bring deeper satisfaction to you, they will make your life more satisfactory and joyful.

After knowing all this, you still have two options in setting money goals for yourself –

  • To carry on life as before and keep running after the goals that are borrowed from someone else

  • To find your own goals & aspirations to follow by knowing yourself better

To know yourself the first condition is that you need to spend some time with yourself without hating or liking any specific aspect of your personality.

There are many ways of knowing yourself better, such as

  1. Reading books like – (1) How Will You Measure Your Life? by Clayton M. Christensen; (2) Brain Wash by David Perlmutter M.D. and Austin Perlmutter M.D.; (3) How to see yourself as you really are by Dalai Lama

  2. Journaling about your life situations answering these three questions – how the situation made you feel, what impact did it have on your life & how has it changed your perception about yourself

  3. Working with a coach – fastest way as the right coach will help you know yourself more than above two activities in a single one-hour session

If you would like to explore the third way of working with a coach, I welcome you to book your free discovery session with me here.
