Limiting beliefs are the subconscious beliefs about money that are keeping you stuck financially. Read post to find out how you can break free of these limiting beliefs.

One of my clients’ Rishit (name changed), kept repeating these words regularly, “I will never have enough money.”

How it affected his financial decisions?

  • He wasn’t able to save/ invest his money due to the fear of losing it

  • He regretted all his spends as he thought he cannot keep spending like that forever

  • He kept moving across different professionals – financial planners to fortune tellers to gain control over his financial future (without implementing anything they said)

  • He couldn’t continue any one profession as he felt it wasn’t enough

  • He wouldn’t take insurance as he thought he is any case going to lose his money

Practically, all his money and career decisions were half hearted. Half hearted decisions were hurting him twice. Firstly, causing him discomfort and unsurety while making a decision and secondly keeping him stuck financially.

So, these beliefs became limiting beliefs for Rishit and kept limiting his progress, not just financially but otherwise too.

Are you too stuck in any such limiting belief?

Why do these beliefs have such a control over you?

Because, primary function of your brain is to protect you. Protection isn’t limited to just saving you from tripping on the road or falling in a ditch. It rather expands to protecting the beliefs that you are living with.

While growing up you have formed certain beliefs about yourself and the world around you. The beliefs could be affecting your life negatively or positively, but trying to change them feels scary. It gives you a feeling, that the world around you might be changing and every change brings uncertainty. Therefore, your brain forces you to make decisions that would preserve your subconscious beliefs.

What is the reality?

The reality is that, many of your subconscious beliefs were formed when you were a child. As a child, you couldn’t find any other reasonable explanation for those words being said by someone close to you. But you are an adult now. You have much better understanding of different reasons that make people say certain things.

What can you do to change your limiting beliefs?

Four step process to break free of your limiting beliefs –

  1. First you need to accept that such statements that you repeating to yourself are your beliefs.

  2. Therefore, they can be true or false. To confirm their validity, you need to assess them.

  3. Then, you need to challenge the belief using all the information available to you.

  4. Find reasons to prove a view opposite to your current limiting belief.

This will help you see your limiting belief objectively. Objectivity brings certainty and confidence.

So, remember your deepest beliefs are also beliefs and when they start becoming limiting beliefs, you need to challenge them.
